Knee injuries are extremely common and range from minor sprains to major fractures. Major injuries to the bones around the knee, particularly if they involve the joint, often require urgent surgery. Fortunately, this is rare and usually due to major trauma such as road traffic collisions.

Knee injuries from sports or minor trauma are far more common and may involve several structures in or around the knee. These include the menisci, the collateral and cruciate ligaments and the joint surface itself. To see an interactive picture of the knee and its anatomy visit here.
The treatment of knee injuries depends on the structures involved and the extent of the injury. Many sprains, strains or ligament injuries can successfully be treated with bracing and physiotherapy. However, ongoing pain or instability may require surgery. Common injuries such as meniscal tears or ligament ruptures can successfully be treated with arthroscopic (keyhole) surgery.
